Trio of WR trades among the most impactful moves of NFL offseason

Several star players were traded at the beginning of the NFL offseason, and for the first time since the pandemic, none of them involved a star quarterback switching teams.

There were several impactful deals reached between the beginning of March and the 2024 NFL Draft in April, and NFL.com recently ranked the top 10 biggest trades of the offseason.

A trio of trades for a wide receiver headlined the list, led by the Houston Texans acquisition of Stefon Diggs from the Buffalo Bills, followed by the Los Angeles Chargers sending Keenan Allen to the Chicago Bears and the Cleveland Browns landing Jerry Jeudy from the Denver Broncos.

The volume of targets Diggs saw last season was on par with what he’d traditionally seen with the Bills, but his yards per game (69.5) was down significantly from what it was during his first three years in Buffalo (85.5), as was his touchdowns per game (0.47 in 2023, 0.59 through first three seasons.)

But the change-of-scenery trade might do him some good as he doesn’t have to be solely responsible for carrying an underperforming WR group like he did in Buffalo.

“When Diggs doesn't get the ball, his presence should create opportunities for others,” NFL.com’s Tom Blair wrote. “When he does get the ball, he should be able to do more with it than he did in 2023. If he can help reigning Offensive Rookie of the Year C.J. Stroud take another step, he'll have played a role in shaping the landscape of NFL contenders for a second time.”

As for Allen, yes, he’s up there in age (32), but he’s also coming off one of, if not the best season of his career. The six-time Pro Bowler caught a career-high 108 passes for 1,243 yards and seven touchdowns, and he averaged the most receiving yards per game (95.3) of his career.

Given DJ Moore’s breakout 2023 season (96 receptions, 1,364 yards, eight touchdowns), Allen is the perfect complement as Chicago’s WR2 and an excellent mentor for 2024 first-round pick Rome Odunze.

“Allen's most important job [is]…helping Caleb Williams end decades of quarterbacking futility for the Bears,” Blair said. “Allen's age and injury history (he's missed 11 games over the past two years) also give me pause. Still, it's possible to envision a scenario where he's one of Williams' safest security blankets in this critical season. Allen could help change the story of pro football in Chicago forever — and that's good enough for at least a top-two spot in this ranking.”

Jeudy was presumably acquired because the Elijah Moore experiment didn’t work out so well in Year 1. Moore, a former second-round pick, had just 59 receptions for 640 yards and he scored only two touchdowns, and the Browns need more out of their No. 2 receiver, especially if Amari Cooper misses any amount of time.

The 25-year-old Jeudy was been held back by mediocre QB play during his four-year tenure with the Broncos, and if Deshaun Watson is healthy, he could finally reach that 1,000-yard milestone that’s eluded him in the NFL.

NFL.com’s complete top 10 list is below.

1. Bills trade WR Stefon Diggs to the Texans
2. Chargers trade WR Keenan Allen to the Bears
3. Broncos trade WR Jerry Jeudy to the Browns
4. Panthers trade OLB Brian Burns to the Giants
5. Chiefs trade CB L'Jarius Sneed to the Titans
6. Eagles trade OLB Haason Reddick to the Jets
7. Buccaneers trade CB Carlton Davis to the Lions
8. Texans trade DT Maliek Collins to the 49ers
9. Steelers trade WR Diontae Johnson to the Panthers
10. Bears trade QB Justin Fields to the Steelers

Also of note, the Bears, Panthers, Steelers and Texans were each involved in two of the top-10 trades. Each team traded away a starter from last season and acquired a potential new starter for 2024.
